Calf Rearer – South Lanarkshire – J A Hewitt & Sons

Experienced Calf Rearer required to join the team as a key member of a modern and progressive dairy unit in the Biggar area of South Lanarkshire in Central Scotland.

The farm has been subject to recent and ongoing investment to provide excellent, modern facilities with a focus on providing an exceptional environment for both animals and staff to excel. The farm is currently milking 900 Holstein cows, with potential for further expansion.

This is a state-of-the-art calving facility. Calf accommodation consists of 6 sheds to house groups from birth to weaning, fed on an automatic feeding system and use of a milk taxi. We are striving for excellence in our calf sheds with a focus on proactivity to ensure that the very best animals are coming forward to join our milking herd in coming years. We pride ourselves on the standard of the young calves on the farm and implement all the latest protocols.

You will be responsible for:

• Dehorning, vaccinating, tagging and other health, welfare and husbandry related tasks from birth.
• You will be required to work alongside our calving team where duties will include feeding, bedding boxes & pens.
• Part of the role will involve keeping accurate records.
• Regular belt weighing will be undertaken to ensure maximum nutrition and performance is achieved. The farm has a sister company in the form of a feed mill supplying their own brand of calf milk and related products. Ongoing milk and feed trials will go hand in hand with belt weighing.

The successful candidate will have suitable experience in a similar role, a good work ethic and attention to detail. Excellent communication, resilience and teamwork skills are required to work alongside the team. Must be a patient person and focused on the welfare of stock. The role requires a dedicated and passionate individual with a good knowledge of stock and a real attention to detail. Extremely high hygiene standards are expected.

A competitive remuneration package is negotiable depending on experience, is available for the right person in return for commitment, dedication and excellent standards.
