Drivers Mate / Second Man

Role Overview & Responsibilities

Mayflower Transport Ltd transport Static Caravans and Twin Unit Mobile Homes all over the UK. Due to continued expansion we are currently recruiting for a Driver's Mate / Second Man. The duties of the role are as follows:

• Have an awareness of health and safety issues, read and comply with the company’s latest Health & Safety & Procedural Employee Manual (dated March 2013) and Company Handbook / Driver's Handbook.
• Wear PPE, i.e. Gloves, steel toe cap safety boots and fluorescent tabard must be worn at all times when loading and unloading.
• Assist the driver in cleaning the vehicle and carrying out minor repairs.
• Assist the driver in loading the lorry and unloading the lorry and be under the driver’s strict supervision at all times.
• Assist the driver in examining the vehicle before setting off, checking the load is safe and reporting any problems to the driver promptly.
• Making and receiving telephone calls to the office / suppliers / customers regarding deliveries, etc.
• Assist the driver in planning routes, navigating the journey and advising the driver about diversions and hazards throughout the journey.
• Assist the driver when parking or manoeuvring the lorry and load in tight spaces.

Additional skills required:

• Have a good level of general fitness and stamina.
• Be reliable and punctual.
• Be a confident map reader.
• Use common sense and have a responsible attitude.
• Have a polite attitude towards other road users.
• Have good customer service skills.
• Basic numeracy and literacy skills for completing record sheets and paperwork.
• Good eyesight.
• Work well in a team.
• Maintain a good level of personal hygiene

Salary: Minimum Wage plus a Nights Out Subsistence Allowance of £20 per night (with up to a maximum of 5 nights away per week). This is a full time position with some weekend working required from time to time. Own transport to our yard at Folly Gate, Okehampton is essential. Although haulage experience is an advantage, full training will be given.
